Board of Education meeting Wednesday

The Carroll County Board of Education will meet at 5 p.m. Wednesday in Room 007 of the board offices, 125 N. Court St., Westminster.

The regular meeting agenda will be posted on the school system's Web site at www.carrollk12.org.

Meetings will be broadcast live on CETV, Channel 21 on Comcast cable TV, and repeated at 8 p.m. Thursday, Sunday and the next Thursday, and 9 a.m. Saturday.

Back-to-school program registration

The Shepherd's Staff is holding registration for its annual Back-to-School program through July 27 at its office, 30 Carroll St., Westminster.

Only Carroll County students are eligible for the program, which provides necessary school supplies to needy students.

A parent or guardian must register students in person to participate by appointment. Registration hours are from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday, Tuesday and Friday, and 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday.

Donations also are needed for the program. Items in need are basic school supplies (pencils, erasers, paper, scissors, folders, crayons, glue sticks, binders, dividers, etc.), new backpacks, gently used clothing and shoes for all ages and sizes.

Cash for the "Ten Dollars Paves the Way" program to buy new shoes and backpacks also is needed.

Library hosts youth short story contest

The Carroll County Public Library is holding a Summer Shorts Writing Contest for ages11 to 17 in conjunction with the Summer Reading Program.

Youths can write short stories on a topic of their choice. Entries will be accepted through July 28.

Each participant will receive a certificate and prize, in addition to prizes in middle and high school divisions as follows: first place, $50; second, $30; and third, $20.

An awards ceremony will be at 7 p.m. Aug. 29 at the Westminster branch, 50 E. Main St. Winning stories provided in an electronic format will be published on the library's Teen Page.

Entries may be turned in at any of the five branches.

November book fair calls for local authors

The 11th annual Random House Book Fair will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 10 at Carroll Community College.

Local authors are invited to participate in the event. Applications can be downloaded from www.carrollcc.edu. Forms and a registration fee of $25 must be returned by Aug. 1 to the Carroll Community College Foundation Office at 1601 Washington Road, Westminster, 21157.

Local artisans and nonprofit organizations also can participate as exhibitors. Forms are on the above Web site. Fees are $25 for nonprofit organizations and $50 for businesses.

Proceeds from the book fair fund scholarships for students at Carroll.
