Multiservice center to hold ribbon-cutting

The cooperative center created by local nonprofit organizations to reach residents in the southeast area of the county, now known as the North Laurel-Savage Multiservice Center, will hold a community briefing and ribbon-cutting ceremony from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. July 18 to present the expanded services offered at the center to the community.

Representatives from each of the social service organizations at the center will discuss their programs and services. The center offers help with housing, food, fuel and utilities and crisis intervention.

The center is in Whiskey Bottom Shopping Center, 9105 All Saints Road.

Representatives of the Department of Social Services help residents apply for food stamps, cash assistance and medical assistance.

Family and Children's Services offers counseling, employee assistance, in-home services for elderly and disabled people and a Healthy Families program for first-time parents. Third-party insurance is accepted; uninsured clients pay on a sliding scale.

The Community Action Council offers help with food, eviction prevention, energy assistance and crisis intervention.

Kristin Lilly, FIRN's information and referral counselor, is fluent in Spanish and can assist with medical bills, legal referrals, housing and applications for tax identification numbers, birth certificates and passports. Walk-ins are welcome.

The Domestic Violence Center is available to help people in immediate crisis from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Thursdays. Walk-ins are welcome.

Barbara Coleman of the Legal Aid Bureau is available to help with a variety of issues, such as denial of Social Security benefits or unemployment benefits, foreclosures, bankruptcy, custody, domestic violence, landlord-tenant problems and rights of the elderly. (Services are not provided for criminal or traffic court cases.)

Funding for the center is provided by Howard County Department of Citizen Services, the Horizon foundation and the Columbia Foundation.

Montpelier plans anniversary concert

The South Laurel Recreation Council Inc. invites the community to the 29th anniversary of the Montpelier summer Concert Series, to be held at 7:30 p.m. Friday on Montpelier Mansion grounds, 9652 Muirkirk road at Route 197, South Laurel. The concert will be held on the west lawn.

Outta Scope will play jazz, rock, funk and bluegrass.

Admission is free. Free public and handicapped parking is available via the Montpelier drive and Muirkirk road entrances, off Route 197, a quarter-mile west of the Baltimore-Washington Parkway.

Writer's circle -- The Savage branch library, 9525 Durness Lane, will sponsor a meeting of the library's Writer's Circle at 7 p.m. tomorrow. Participants can share their original work with other aspiring authors and receive feedback and support. Registration is not required. 410-880-5980.

For children -- This month's children's programs at the Savage branch library, 9525 Durness Lane, include:

"Pirates of the Atlantic Coast," a program about buccaneers for those ages 5 and older, at 1:30 p.m. Thursday. Registration is required.

"Fairytopia," a program for those ages 7 and older, includes the construction of a fairy world diorama, at 1:30 p.m. July 16. Registration is to begin tomorrow.

"1001 Worms," a program for those ages 5 to 10 on the usefulness of worms with master gardener Susan Levi-Goerlich, will be held at 1:30 p.m. July 24. Registration is to begin July 17.
