Self-defense class to start this week
The River Hill Community Association is offering Taekwon-Do for All Ages, an opportunity for parents and children, couples and friends to learn self-defense and fitness together.
The class will be held from 7 p.m. to 7:50 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, this week through Aug. 30.
Taekwon-Do Turbo, a class for teenagers and adults seeking a fitness challenge, will be offered from 8 p.m. to 8:50 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, this week through Aug. 30.

Mobilized -- Army National Guard Staff Sgt. G. Michael Thompson, son of Grover C. and Linda A. Thompson of Woodbine, has been mobilized for a future deployment to an undisclosed overseas location in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. He is an infantry squad leader normally assigned to the 1st Battalion, 175th Infantry in Silver Spring.

Cross-country camp -- The Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks is accepting registration for its cross-country camp, to be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 6-10 at River Hill High School in Clarksville. River Hill varsity cross-country coach Earl E. Lauer will lead the camp, which is in its seventh year. The focus will be on video analysis of running technique, training basics, diet and nutrition, care and prevention of injuries and equipment selection. The cost is $130. 410-313-7275.
Help sought -- Humane Society of Washington County asks residents of Washington, Frederick and Howard counties to help with a rehabilitation effort for more than 70 horses impounded by the society last year because of neglect. Nature programs -- Howard County Conservancy will offer summer nature programs for preschoolers ages 2 to 4 and their parents or caregivers. The 1 1/2 -hour programs will be held from 10 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. Wednesday, and July 18 and 25 and Aug. 1. Stories, crafts and a short nature walk are planned. The cost is $5 a child.
