Bridge projects close two roads

The Engineering and Construction Division of the Harford County Department of Public Works has announced the temporary closure of two county roads for bridge projects.

Neal Road will be closed between St. Paul's Church Road and Onion Road for bridge rehabilitation work. A detour has been set up until July 16, when the work is expected to be completed.

Telegraph Road will be closed between Madonna Road and Eden Mill Road to replace the bridge at that location. A detour route is expected to remain in place until work is completed Oct. 1.

Disabilities group seeks two members

The Harford County Commission on Disabilities is accepting applications to fill two vacancies, both of which require the applicant to be a county resident with a disability.

The commission is a 16-member volunteer body, made up of residents who are interested in issues affecting individuals with disabilities.

The commission was established in 1995. Members are appointed by the county executive, with the approval of the County Council.

The deadline for applications is July 20.

Conservation saves county money

Harford County government has instituted measures to conserve water and energy through a contract with Johnson Controls Inc.

The program saved the county $300,000 last year by reducing consumption, county officials said.

The county began several conservation methods, including upgrades to lighting fixtures, flush valves, insulation and HVAC units, and implementing systems like the remote monitoring of equipment via the Internet.

The contract with Johnson Controls guaranteed savings of $300,000 after the first year of the program. The company recently presented a rebate check to the county for $35,000. The check was the difference between the actual savings of $265,000 the county realized and the $300,000 guarantee from Johnson Controls.

"Although we came up just a bit short of our goal, I am very encouraged by the progress we have made," said County Executive David R. Craig.

'Beautiful People' sought in Harford

Nominations are being accepted through Aug. 3 for the 21st annual Harford's Most Beautiful People volunteer awards.

The award is given to those who assist people around them and whose acts of good will have gone unnoticed.

All nominees and their guests will be honored at a program hosted by County Executive David R. Craig in October. One nominee will represent Harford County at the governor's reception in the fall.

Nomination forms are available at all branches of the Harford County Public Library and at county senior centers.
