Humorist Dave Barry will be the featured entertainer at the Howard County Chamber of Commerce's annual Signature Event on Oct. 5.

The event, which recognizes successful businesses and business people, is one of the largest for the 800-member chamber. It is to begin at 6 p.m. at Turf Valley Resort in Ellicott City and is sponsored by Turf Valley and M&T; Bank.

Barry was a syndicated columnist for 25 years, appearing in more than 500 newspapers around the world. He won a Pulitzer Prize for commentary in 1988 and has written 25 books. His writing was the basis for the television comedy "Dave's World."

"The chamber is delighted with this year's presenter," said Pam Klahr, president of the chamber. "There is so much pressure on businesses and everyone is so busy that we don't take time to sit back and laugh, so we thought it was appropriate to do something fun this year. And who better to help us laugh at ourselves than Dave Barry?"

At the event, the chamber will also present its Awards for Chamber Excellence. The awards include ones for business leader, entrepreneur, large business, small business, young professional and volunteer of the year.

The evening will include pre-and post-dinner receptions. Tickets are $125 for members and $150 for nonmembers. Corporate tables are available.
