Kings Contrivance seniors offered free lunch, music

Seniors who live in Kings Contrivance village are invited to a free lunch with their neighbors, to be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. July 31.

A main course and beverages will be provided; those who attend are asked to take a dessert to share.

The lunch will include musical entertainment by Larry Scott, keyboardist and vocalist.

Admission is free. Registration is requested by July 25.

Belly dancing for adults July 16

The Long Reach Community Association is offering belly-dancing classes for adults July 16 through Sept. 10.

A beginner class meets from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. Mondays; advanced students meet from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. The cost is $76 for eight weeks of classes. A 5 percent discount is offered to those living on Columbia Association-assessed property.

Two local bands set to perform

MisMatch, a Howard County band, will perform at the Lake Elkhorn Pavilion at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at a Walk-A-Thon for the Gan Israel Preschool and Day Camp in Columbia.

Admission is free and everyone is welcome.

MisMatch and Disarmingly Charming, also based in Columbia, will perform at 6 p.m. today at 7014 Westmoreland Ave., Takoma Park. Admission is $10. Tickets are available in advance or at the door.

Around Town

Extra lane -- The State Highway Administration has begun a $460,000 project to widen Route 108 (Old Annapolis Road) between Howard High School, Centre Park Drive and Phelps Luck Road. The project will create an exclusive right-turn lane along westbound Route 108. The project, which is intended to improve safety and reduce congestion near the school, is expected to be completed by early September, weather permitting. Motorists can expect single-lane closures between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. and 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. weekdays. 301-624-8100 or 800-635-5119.

At the library -- A reading program for children, "Reading Roadtrip," offers prizes for books children read during the summer. Participants can register at the east Columbia branch, 6600 Cradlerock Way. A program is also available for babies and toddlers to age 3, in which parents can read books, magazines or newspapers to their children and earn prizes.

An adult summer reading club, sponsored by Friends of the Howard County Library, is offered through Aug. 31. Participants will be eligible for monthly prize drawings. Entry forms are available at the information desk in each library. www.hclibrary.org.

Football camp -- Howard County Football Technique Camp for youngsters in grades three to nine will be held from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. tomorrow through Friday at Hammond High School in Columbia. The camp, staffed by Howard County high school coaches, offers offensive and defensive position techniques and instruction in the kicking game. Certified coaches will teach speed training. Each day's camp concludes with noncontact, competitive football games under coaches' supervision. Tuition is $160. A $10 discount is offered to members of youth football leagues. 301-776-8962.

Poet laureate -- Maryland Poet Laureate Michael S. Glaser will be at the east Columbia library at 7 p.m. Wednesday as part of "Poetry's Here @ Your Maryland Library," a program of the Maryland Center of the Book. He will invite his audience to read new poems and old favorites, and he will talk about poetry, art and the natural world. Glaser's works include A Lover's Eye, In the Men's Room and Other Poems and Being a Father. Books will be available for purchase and signing. Registration is required. 410-313-7700.

Debaters -- The east Columbia library will offer a debate symposium for coaches and middle and high school teachers interested in learning more about argument, speech technique, research skills and how to sharpen students' debating skills and prepare them for competition.
