Carroll woman sentenced for SSA scheme
A former Carroll County woman who collected her deceased husband's benefits after she remarried received a federal prison sentence of almost two years yesterday for lying to the Social Security Administration and pocketing $70,000 in benefits to which she was not entitled.
Jennifer Jones Peach Gimbel, 39, of Arizona pleaded guilty in April to making false statements to a government agency. Yesterday, U.S. District Judge Richard D. Bennett sentenced her to to 21 months in prison, followed by three years' supervised release.

Police identify victim of fall
Police released the identity yesterday of the 28-year-old man who fell more than 60 feet while taking photographs on a ledge in Rocks State Park in Harford County on Thursday. Cory Vaughn, 28, of Audubon, Iowa, was flown to Maryland Shock Trauma Center, said Maryland Natural Resources Police. He remained in critical condition yesterday, hospital officials said. Vaughn and family members were hiking to the King and Queen Seat, a 190-foot rock formation at the park. The incident was the third rescue at the King and Queen Seat this year, county fire officials said.

Clinton man gets 10 years for cocaine
A Prince George's County man stopped by Anne Arundel County police with cocaine in his vehicle was sentenced yesterday in federal court in Baltimore to serve more than 10 years behind bars. U.S. District Judge Richard D. Bennett ordered that Franklin Washington, 35, of Clinton spend 121 months behind bars for possession with intent to distribute crack cocaine. According to his guilty plea, on five occasions from April to September 2006, Washington sold cocaine to a confidential informant. On Sept. 1, 2006, Anne Arundel County police stopped Washington's vehicle for a traffic violation. Officers discovered 118 grams of crack cocaine and almost 18 grams of powder cocaine.

Turtle Derby scheduled today
The 66th Annual Chesapeake Turtle Derby is set for 11 a.m. today in Patterson Park, near the Pulaski Monument. The derby -- sponsored by the Patterson Park Recreation Complex and the Baltimore City Department of Recreation and Parks -- requires participants to bring their own turtles, though some loaners may be available. Turtles will be divided into three categories for the competition -- box turtles, tortoises and all other types. Registration, which is required to enter the competition, begins at 10 a.m.
