McGowan is hospital's chairman of the board

Howard County General Hospital has announced that W. Brian McGowan, senior vice president of administration at W.R. Grace, has been elected chairman of the hospital's board of trustees. The hospital is part of Johns Hopkins Medicine.

He succeeds Beverly White-Seals, assistant general counsel of General Growth Properties Inc., who chaired the board since 2005.

Harry Lundy, president and chief executive officer of Williamsburg Group LLC, will serve as vice chairman, and Ann B. Mech, coordinator of legal affairs for the University of Maryland School of Nursing, will be secretary.

New trustees include Dr. Marvin P. Davis, a board-certified obstetrician and gynecologist at Capital Women's Care Howard County; Peter J. Rogers Jr., senior vice president and corporate officer of business development and investor relations for Micros Systems Inc.; Sue Song, a health care consultant and administrator for Powell Recovery Center; and Walker Gill Wylie, president of Johns Hopkins Medical Management Corp.

The trustees will serve three-year terms.

Cardiologist to speak at Tai Sophia

Tai Sophia Institute, 7750 Montpelier Road, North Laurel, will sponsor an evening discussion with Dr. B.M. Hedge, a cardiologist and Ayurvedic physician, from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday.

Hedge, a guest lecturer at the first World Convention on Science and Spirituality in January, will discuss "Our Life Force Flowing Through Out Heart."

The lecture is open to the public. Admission is free, but registration is required.

Red Cross to offer classes next month

The Central Maryland Red Cross will offer a first-aid course to train participants to identify and care for victims of illness and sudden injuries from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Aug. 16 at First Presbyterian Church, 9325 Presbyterian Circle, Columbia. The cost is $40.

A course in child and infant cardiopulmonary resuscitation will be offered from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 18 at Owen Brown Community Center, 6800 Cradlerock Way, Columbia. The cost is $50.
