Three charged in boating incident

The Maryland Natural Resource Police arrested a Towson couple and a Sherwood Forest woman east of the Route 450 Bridge on the Severn River Friday after it was found that the operator of the boat was intoxicated, police said.

U.S. Coast Guard officers originally stopped the 40-foot motorboat at 11:14 p.m. Friday. Carl Smith, 65, of Towson was arrested after he failed sobriety tests. While the officers attempted to arrest Smith, his wife, Judith, 63, and Neville Gardner, 56, verbally and physically assaulted them, police said. Carl Smith was charged with operating a vessel while under the influence of alcohol and other charges. His wife was charged with two counts of second-degree assault and other charges. Gardner was charged with two counts of second-degree assault and interfering with a lawful arrest. All three were taken before the Anne Arundel County District Court commissioner, where they were released on personal recognizance.
