The Baltimore Sun

You wouldn't guess it from the temperature, but today the Earth stands at its greatest distance from the sun for this year. At 5 p.m. EDT, our planet will be about 94,508,700 miles from the sun. It's called "aphelion," and Guy Ottewell's Astronomical Calendar tells us this year's is among the latest possible. In 1960, we reached aphelion on July 2. Next Jan. 2, Earth's slightly lopsided orbit around the sun will bring us to "perihelion" - closest to the sun, at 91,400,000 miles.
