Journey is weary, yet imaginative

There couldn't be a more timely movie version of the European immigrant experience than The Golden Door.

In an era when TV newscasters can accuse illegal immigrants of spreading leprosy, this tale of a Sicilian family sailing to America a century ago shows U.S. fear of the outsider posing as pseudo-science even at Ellis Island.

The Golden Door (Miramax) Starring Vincenzo Amato, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Aurora Quattrocchi, Francesco Casisa, Filippo Pucillo. Directed by Emanuele Crialese. Rated PG-13. Time 120 minutes.
