Susan G. Dorsey, Ph.D, an assistant professor at the University of Maryland School of Nursing, has received a five-year, $1.8 million grant from the National Institute of Nursing Research. Her study's purpose is to try to understand how anti-retroviral therapy regimens for patients with HIV cause chronic pain.
Eugene "Gene" Friedman, past board chairman of the Maryland Hospital Association and current board member of Northwest Hospital Center and LifeBridge Health, received Maryland Hospital Association's highest honor, the Distinguished Service Award, at last month's annual meeting of the group. The Distinguished Service Award recognizes the achievements of hospital leaders who are committed to improving health care in Maryland. Friedman is chairman of MHA's political action committee, Health Policy Leadership Alliance.
Jackie Powers, director of patient financial services at Anne Arundel Medical Center, has received the Tribute to Women and Industry (TWIN) Award, presented by the YWCA. The award recognizes women in management or executive positions. Powers leads a team of 40 staff members who assist patients and hospital staff with questions about insurance, billing and financial counseling. Powers designed an education and study program that enabled her staff to achieve national certification by the American Association of Health Care Administrative Managers. More than 80 percent of her staff is now certified.
