George William Viehmeyer Sr., a retired Westinghouse director of procurement, died of leukemia Saturday at Brandywine Hospital in Coatesville, Pa. The former Linthicum resident was 79.
Born in Baltimore and raised on Patapsco Street, Mr. Viehmeyer attended Southern and what is now Patterson Park high schools before joining the Navy at the end of World War II and serving aboard a minesweeper in the Pacific.
After the war, he earned a high school diploma at the old Veterans Institute. He worked at International Harvester and earned a business administration degree at the Johns Hopkins University.
Mr. Viehmeyer retired in 1990 as director of procurement at the Westinghouse Corp. in Linthicum, where he worked for 37 years. He moved to Myrtle Beach, S.C., and founded a business, Carolina Collectibles. In 2002, he moved to Coatesville.
Mr. Viehmeyer belonged to Toastmasters International and formerly was active at St. John's Lutheran Church in Linthicum. He also was a past PTA president at Linthicum Elementary School, Lindale Middle and the old Andover High.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Olivet United Methodist Church in Coatesville.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, the former Alice May Williams; a son, George William Viehmeyer Jr. of Wilkesboro, N.C.; two daughters, Mary Viehmeyer Roman of Abingdon and Carrie Viehmeyer Snyder of Coatesville; and four grandchildren.
