Fatal hit-run conviction

A 26-year-old woman has been convicted in a hit-and-run accident in East Baltimore in 2004 that killed a 49-year-old woman who was walking across the street, city prosecutors said yesterday.

Keionna Baker of the 12600 block of Water Spout Lane in Owings Mills was convicted by a jury Monday of leaving the scene of an accident in which serious injury occurred, said Margaret T. Burns, a spokeswoman for the city state's attorney's office. She had been charged with vehicular manslaughter.

Baker is scheduled to be sentenced Sept. 11. She faces a maximum of five years in prison, Burns said.

The accident occurred July 30, 2004, as Doreen Winters walked across the 900 block of E. North Ave. about 9:50 p.m. Burns said that Winters had been on her way to a nightclub with her husband to sing karaoke when she was struck by a silver 1998 Mitsubishi Gallant.

The driver drove away, and authorities said they found the car a short time later, abandoned a few blocks from the accident scene. Police arrested Baker on May 30, 2006, at an apartment on Lachlan Circle in Baltimore County.

Burns said prosecutors did not pursue vehicular a manslaughter charge because "there was no evidence regarding the actual event that could show gross negligence" such as being impaired by alcohol or excessive speeding.
