Blagden H. Wharton, 81

Blagden Hazlehurst "Bubby" Wharton, a retired banker and outdoorsman, died of congestive heart failure June 21 at his Reisterstown home. He was 81.

Born in Baltimore and raised in Roland Park, he graduated from St. James School in Hagerstown.

Mr. Wharton went to work at the old Fidelity Trust Co. in the 1940s and later joined Maryland National Bank. He later was transferred to the Eastern Shore, where he managed its Cambridge branch until retiring in the mid-1990s.

Active in Republican politics, Mr. Wharton had served as treasurer for several campaigns of former state Sen. C.A. Porter Hopkins.

He also had been on the board of the Baltimore County Health Department and was treasurer of the Dorchester County Historical Society.

Mr. Wharton enjoyed waterfowl hunting, fishing and golf. He also liked listening to big-band music and reading Westerns.

Mr. Wharton had been a member of the Maryland Club, Green Spring Valley Hunt Club and the old Merchants' Club.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Episcopal Church of the Redeemer, 5603 N. Charles St.

Survivors include a son, William Wallace Spence Wharton of Reno, Nev.; three daughters, Charlotte McKim Wharton of Reisterstown, Elizabeth Dixon Alluisi of Baltimore and Mary Wharton Houck of Towson; a brother, John Gill Wharton of Cross Keys; and four grandsons. Marriages to the former Camillia Ridgely Simpson and Margaret Bradley ended in divorce.
