Man fatally shot in Barclay

The Baltimore Sun

Two people were gunned down on a sidewalk in Baltimore's Barclay neighborhood in a midday shooting yesterday, and one of the victims later died.

It was the latest homicide in an inner-city neighborhood besieged by gunfire and violence this year. The slaying - which took place halfway between city school headquarters on North Avenue and an office of the Maryland Division of Parole and Probation in the 2000 block of Guilford Ave. - was the fifth killing in Barclay since February and the 160th homicide in the city this year.

A man brandishing a handgun approached the two men and opened fire, striking both victims, said Agent Donny Moses, a police spokesman.

Allen Burton, 39, of the 1600 block of E. 31st St. died at Maryland Shock Trauma Center at 12:45 p.m., Moses said. The other victim, a 61-year-old whose identity was not released, was taken to Johns Hopkins Hospital and is expected to survive, Moses said.

Police officials have said that the neighborhood has seen a surge in violence connected to gang activity. Arrests had been made in at least two of the slayings before yesterday's incident.

Yesterday, police also found the body of a slain Baltimore man in the back of a leased 2007 Jeep Cherokee, Moses said.

Nathaniel Price, 30, was last seen Thursday; his mother reported him missing Saturday, Moses said.

The leasing company notified police yesterday that they had located the vehicle, using an electronic tracking system, in the 4900 block of Greencrest Road in the Frankford neighborhood of Northeast Baltimore, Moses said.

Medics discovered Price's body inside with multiple gunshot wounds, Moses said.

In addition, police have ruled that a body found in a trash can behind a rowhouse in the Oliver neighborhood is that of a homicide victim, Moses said. Medical examiners determined that the unidentified man had a gunshot wound in the upper torso.

Moses also released the identities of three previous homicide victims:

Davon Turner, 21, of the 700 block of N. Glover St. in East Baltimore, who was shot Sunday in the 800 block of N. Patterson Park Ave.

Gerald Smith, 25, who was found shot and slumped over the steering wheel of an idling car in the 4800 block of Herring Run Drive on Sunday.

Jewels Cook, 36, of the 2400 block of Marbourne Ave. in the Lakeland neighborhood, whose body was discovered near the Cylburn Arboretum in Northwest Baltimore on Wednesday.

Police have no suspects and know of no motives in the killings, Moses said.
