Dean to be named for pharmacy school

The University of Maryland, Baltimore, is expected to announce today the promotion of a veteran researcher to be dean of the pharmacy school. Natalie D. Eddington, 48, who has been at the School of Pharmacy since 1991 and also earned her doctorate there, will succeed David A. Knapp, who is stepping down after 18 years as dean. Eddington said one of her primary challenges would be to find new sources of pharmaceutical research funding because federal support has decreased in recent years. She will also oversee the expansion of the country's fourth-oldest pharmacy school from downtown Baltimore to a Montgomery County campus this fall, officials said.

No charges planned in fatal accident

Criminal charges will not be filed against the drivers of two cars that collided in Baltimore on Saturday, resulting in the death of a 3-year-old boy, police said yesterday. However, Takia Freeman and Scott Gillard, both of Baltimore, could be cited for traffic violations, said Agent Donny Moses, a police spokesman. Freeman's and Gillard's addresses were not released, but Moses confirmed they resided in the city. Charles Murrell was standing on a street corner about 3:30 p.m. Saturday when he was struck by the cars after they collided at the intersection of Lanvale Street and Fulton Avenue. The boy, who was heading to a nearby pool, was pronounced dead at the scene. Janel Rice, 22, of the 1800 block of W. Baltimore St. and Vielca Rios, 20, of the 1900 block of W. Lanvale St. also were struck. They were treated at University of Maryland Medical Center for injuries that were not life-threatening, police said. Freeman, who was driving a Chevrolet Malibu, struck Gillard's silver Chrysler Sebring as he was attempting to make a U-turn, said Moses. Neither driver was injured.
