Officers use Taser for the first time
Anne Arundel County police used a Taser for the first time to subdue a man who they said was armed and ran from officers yesterday in Glen Burnie.
Officers patrolling in the 400 block of Pamela Road about 1 a.m. approached a group of men who were drinking in the parking lot of an apartment complex, police said.
One of the men ran and refused officers' orders to stop, police said. Officers chased him and said they saw him reach into the front of his pants.
An officer jolted him with the stun gun, and he collapsed. Police said that they found a loaded .38-caliber revolver underneath him.
Sylvester W. George Jr., 25, of the 8400 block of Pioneer Drive in Severn was taken to Baltimore Washington Medical Center for evaluation and later charged with consuming alcoholic beverages in a public place, possession of a concealed deadly weapon and resisting arrest.
Tasers can send up to 50,000 volts of electricity into a person's body and are used by police to incapacitate a suspect without using deadly force.
This was the second time county police had drawn the weapon since the department armed 50 officers with Tasers on June 1. A Glen Burnie man dropped his knife when an officer pointed the Taser at him in a confrontation in Hanover on June 5, police said.
