UC's medical van to offer screenings

Upper Chesapeake HealthLink's new medical mobile van will be in the Upper Chesapeake Medical Center's parking lot M, MacPhail and Tollgate roads, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Free blood pressure, sleep disorder and body fat analysis screenings will be offered.

Also available are: cholesterol screenings for $10; osteoporosis screenings for $15; and cardiac risk assessments for $20 (cash or check only).

Please note that osteoporosis screenings require a scan of the bare foot.

Hospice nets $75,000 from annual regatta

Harford Hospice held its eighth annual regatta June 1 with a sellout crowd of more than 700 people on hand for the race, dinner and dancing on the shores of the Susquehanna River in Havre de Grace.

A member of Upper Chesapeake/St. Joseph Home Care, Harford Hospice set a regatta record by netting $75,000 from the event.

The race for the 2007 Regatta Cup included 44 registered sailboats from the Tidewater Marina in Havre de Grace. The winning captain will compete in the National Hospice Regatta Championship in Annapolis.

All proceeds go to Harford Hospice to support its programs and services to patients in need of palliative care in Harford, Cecil and Baltimore counties and Baltimore City.

Harford hospitals noted for quality

Upper Chesapeake Health has announced that Harford Memorial Hospital and Upper Chesapeake Medical Center have been recognized for quality patient outcomes by HealthGrades, a provider of independent hospital ratings.

In the eighth annual HealthGrades Hospital Quality in America Study, Upper Chesapeake Medical Center received several acclamations:

2007 Distinguished Hospital Award -- Clinical Excellence, putting the hospital in the top 5 percent of hospitals nationally in clinical excellence.

2007 Vascular Care Excellence Award -- No. 1 in Maryland and in top 5 percent nationally.

2007 General Surgery Care Excellence Award -- No. 3 in Maryland and in top 10 percent nationally.

Ranked No. 2 in Maryland for Overall Orthopedic Care.

Harford Memorial Hospital ranked in the top five in Maryland for general surgery. It also received five-star recognition for total knee replacement; hip fracture repair; treatment of community acquired pneumonia, sepsis, pancreatitis; and appendectomy.

HealthGrades independently analyzed nearly 5,000 hospitals in all 50 states and Washington, objectively assessing their clinical outcomes and quality.
