Board to meet Wednesday

The Carroll County Board of Education will hold an administrative meeting at 1 p.m. Wednesday in Room 007 of the board offices at 125 N. Court St., Westminster.

Meetings are broadcast on CETV, Channel 21 on Comcast cable TV, and repeated at 8 p.m. Thursday, Sunday and the next Thursday, and 9 a.m. Saturday.

CCC to offer French courses

Carroll Community College will offer courses in French 101 during the fall 2007 semester, from 5 p.m. to 6:20 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays.

French 201 is also offered in the fall from 2 p.m. to 3:20 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays.

The fall semester begins Aug. 27.

The three-credit course is for those who would like an introduction to the language or for those who have completed French in high school. It provides a foundation in listening, reading, writing and speaking, along with grammar and culture.

Walk-in registration is held at the college campus at 1601 Washington Road through Aug. 27. Hours are from 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday to Thursday; 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday; and 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Aug. 25.

CCC book fair set for Nov. 10

The 11th annual Random House Book Fair will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 10 at Carroll Community College.

Local authors are invited to participate in the event. Applications and a registration fee of $25 must be returned by Aug. 1 to the CCC Foundation Office, 1601 Washington Road, Westminster, Md. 21157.

Artisans and non-profit organizations also can participate as exhibitors. Fees are $25 for nonprofit organizations and $50 for businesses.

Board approves calendar revisions

The Carroll County Board of Education has approved the following revisions to the 2007-2008 school year calendar:

Schools and offices will be closed Feb. 12 for presidential primary Election Day. The Maryland General Assembly changed the date of the primary from March 4 to Feb. 12. March 4 will be a regular school day.

The conference day scheduled for April 21 is changed to a regular school day, increasing the number of days for emergency closings to six.

Montessori school to open in fall

A new Montessori school for children ages 2 to 5 will open in September at 7590 College Road in Sykesville.

The Ava Wanas Montessori School will be owned and operated by Marie Atalla.

The curriculum will include a French enrichment program. The school will have two classrooms.

The school will offer part- and full-time programs, as well as before and after care for working parents. Potty training is not a requirement for entry.

Atalla, who grew up in Egypt, has degrees in economics from the American University in Cairo. She took her Montessori training at the North American Montessori Center in Canada, and required child development courses at Howard Community College.

2 schools receive Green awards

Two Carroll County schools have received Maryland Green School Awards for 2007 for meeting strict environmental education criteria.

Century High has a variety of environmental education opportunities, an environmental club and an outdoor plant nursery. Class activities involve native plant propagation, habitat enhancement, aquaculture and bay grasses.

Mechanicsville Elementary kindergarten students tagged and released monarch butterflies, while fifth-graders planted turtlehead plants to attract the Baltimore Checker Spot butterfly.
