The east Columbia library, 6600 Cradlerock Way, will offer a debate symposium for coaches and middle and high school teachers interested in learning more about argument, speech technique, research skills and how to sharpen students' debating skills and prepare them for competition.
The workshop will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. July 19. Registration begins July 5.
Extra lane to be added to Route 108
The State Highway Administration has begun a $460,000 project to widen Route 108 (Old Annapolis Road) between Howard High School, Centre Park Drive and Phelps Luck Road. The project will create right-turn lane along westbound Route 108.
The project, which is to improve safety and reduce congestion near the school during peak travel times, is expected to be completed by early September, weather permitting.
Motorists can expect single-lane closures between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. and 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. weekdays.

Churches to present Sacred Harp Singers
Christ United Methodist Church and the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Columbia will present a concert by the Baltimore Sacred Harp Singers at a worship service at 10 a.m. July 8 at Owen Brown Interfaith Center, 7246 Cradlerock Way.
The combined congregations will listen and practice singing in the shape note mode -- a system of musical notation designed to facilitate congregational singing.
Mobilized -- Army National Guard Staff Sgt. Robert W. Zimmermann, son of Eileen C. Zimmermann of Long Reach and Dr. Robert W. Zimmermann of Rockville, has been mobilized and activated for a future deployment to an undisclosed overseas location in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. He is a 1983 graduate of Springbrook High School.
At the library -- A reading program for children, "Reading Roadtrip," offers prizes for books children read during the summer. Participants can register at the east Columbia branch, 6600 Cradlerock Way. A program is also available for babies and toddlers to age 3, in which parents can read books, magazines or newspapers to their children and earn prizes.

Bridge, tai chi -- The east Columbia 50+ Center at the east Columbia library, 6600 Cradlerock Way, is offering a free Bridge Night for advanced players from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Wednesdays.
"Simplified Yang's Tai Chi," 24 gentle moves taught by Ping Mao, will be offered from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. once or twice a week. The cost is $6 a class. A series of classes is to begin on a date to be determined.
A "Harmonize Your Body" exercise class featuring the 4-S method (Stamina-Strength-Stretch-Synergy) is to be offered from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. The cost is $3 a class. 410-313-7680.
Baby-sitting -- Columbia Teen Center, 5853 Robert Oliver Place, will offer its one-day "Baby-sitting Made Easy" workshop from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday and July 21. The program, for those ages 11 to 14, includes first aid, emergency procedures, safety precautions and other baby-sitting skills. Poet laureate -- Maryland Poet Laureate Michael Glaser will be at the east Columbia library at 7 p.m. July 11, as part of "Poetry's Here @ Your Maryland Library," a program of the Maryland Center of the Book. He will invite his audience to read new poems and old favorites, and he will talk about poetry, art and the natural world. Glaser's works include A Lover's Eye, In the Men's Room and Other Poems and Being a Father. Books will be available for purchase and signing. Registration is to begin Wednesday.
