Howard signs pact with Liberian system
The Howard County public school system has signed a partnership agreement with the Monrovia consolidated school system in Liberia, West Africa.
The partnership is intended to create an alliance to promote mutual understanding and common goals and establish a dialogue for possible cultural exchanges.
The two school systems will explore opportunities to enhance their programs and build understanding of each nation's history and culture by exchanging personnel, information and other resources.
Safe-motorcycling classes set at HCC
Bob's BMW Motorcycles Inc. in Jessup has hired Howard Community College to provide motorcycle safety classes to its customers this summer.
Starting this month, Bob's BMW's customers can register for basic-rider or experienced-rider motorcycle safety courses.
The college's motorcycle safety courses, which are offered in the spring, summer and fall, are approved by the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration and Motorcycle Safety Foundation. Successful completion of the beginner classes can qualify the rider for a motorcycle license.
More than 60 motorcycle safety classes are being offered this year by the college's Division of Continuing Education and Workforce Development, said Jim Schmidt, the college's director of motor vehicle safety programs.
"We run classes every week; we just added a lot of new classes to accommodate the demand, and we expect to train about 1,200 new students this year," he said.

Engineering course for high-schoolers
The Johns Hopkins University Whiting School of Engineering will offer a four-week summer course, "What is Engineering?" from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays July 9 through Aug. 3 at the university's new Dorsey Campus, 6810 Deerpath Road, Elkridge.
The course, which is open to rising juniors and seniors in high school, includes engineering concepts and participation in lab experiments, simulations and field trips. Transportation will be provided. Students will have opportunities to meet professional engineers and complete team projects such as building weight-bearing spaghetti bridges and mousetraps that catch pingpong balls.

Board of Education to meet Thursday
The Howard County Board of Education will hold a regularly scheduled meeting at 4 p.m. Thursday in the boardroom at the Department of Education, 10910 Route 108, Ellicott City.
The afternoon session, and an evening session that is to begin at 7:30 p.m., will start with a public forum during which members of the public can address the board on any topic for which there is no formal hearing process. Sign-up in advance is preferred.

Music camps planned at HCC
Howard Community College's Musical Arts Center will offer summer music camps for beginners ages 5 to 10, intermediate and advanced students in strings and orchestra, rock, jazz and brass.
A Gemini Piano Trio Workshop for ages 11 to 18 and piano camps for ages 7 to 18 will also be offered.
"Arts Adventures: Music, Dance and Theater Experience" will be offered for ages 6 to 13 tomorrow through Friday. Beginning violin classes for children ages 4 and older will also be offered.
