Appletree gets 2nd term at ACS

Roy Appletree, a Columbia resident and executive director of FIRN (Foreign-born Information & Referral Network), has been named president of the board of directors of the Association of Community Services for a second term.

Rene Buckman, executive director of the Columbia Teen Center, is to be vice president of the ACS, and Dave Michener, executive pastor of Church Ministries at Bridgeway Community Church, is secretary of the ACS board.

Jay Herbert Blackman, senior vice president of Operations at Howard County General Hospital, will serve as the board's treasurer for a second term.

Newly elected to the association's board of directors were Dr. Peter L. Beilenson, Howard County health officer; Steve Girard of Grace Community Church; Debra A. Popiel of Grassroots Crisis Intervention; Harry Schwarz of Tai Sophia Institute; Kelli Shimabukuro of the Howard County Library; David Shippee, chief executive officer of Chase-Brexton Health Services.

Hospital official gets master's degree

Judy Brown, senior vice president of patient satisfaction, performance improvement and risk management at Howard County General Hospital, has received a master's degree in nursing from the Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing.

Staff member Henriette Karekezi, R.N., received a bachelor's degree from the University of Maryland, and Connie Gull, R.N., has received a post-graduate certificate in parish nursing from Wesley Seminar (American University) in Washington.
