About the year 1300 A.D., the Italian poet Dante Alighieri went through one heck of a midlife crisis. Unrequited love, venomous political rivals, suicidal despair - Dante grappled with, and chronicled, it all in The Inferno.

It was a vision of hell so graphic and detailed that, seven centuries later, it continues to grip artists' imaginations.
