Brad Hastings, from Hog Neck Golf Course in Easton, lost a 2-up lead in a three-hole stretch midway through the afternoon round, then rallied to take the 86th annual amateur championship of the Maryland State Golf Association yesterday with a 2-and-1 win over Richard Holland, a member of the host Columbia Country Club in Chevy Chase.
The match was even after 32 holes before Hastings won the 15th in the afternoon round with a 5-foot birdie putt. He then won the 16th with a difficult two-putt par from 20 feet followed by a Holland miss from 5 feet. Holland sent his tee shot at No. 17 into the 18th fairway, then cut a high shot around a tree and found the green, 75 feet from the cup. He needed to win the hole to continue but his birdie bid fell short, and Hastings made par.
"After the morning round, I was lucky to be even," said Hastings, also the 1999 champion, "and later when my ball-striking came around, I was defensive with my putting. ... Without some good reads from my caddie, Jimmy Myers, I might not have made a few putts."
Baltimore Spring Publinx Championship -- Tim Osgood used three back-nine birdies to help win his second Publinx title at Pine Ridge Golf Course, finishing with a 2-under 70 for a 36-hole total of 137, four strokes better than Brett Keller, who shot a 75 yesterday.
