Portion of Route 97 to close for repairs June 8-11

The Maryland Department of Transportation's State Highway Administration will temporarily close a portion of Route 97 (Roxbury Mills Road) about one-half mile north of Jennings Chapel Road.

The closure will be from about 8 p.m. Friday to 5 p.m. June 11, weather permitting, to allow crews to replace a culvert along Route 97 over a Cattail Creek tributary.

Motorists will be asked to detour from Route 97 to Union Chapel Road, to Jennings Chapel Road and back to Route 97. Local traffic will have access to homes.

The closure is expected to be for one weekend only. Installation of guardrails will require daytime single-lane closures between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Monday through Friday for up to two additional weeks.

Spiritual center sets day of prayer

Bon Secours Spiritual Center in Marriottsville will offer a "Friends' Day of Prayer" from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday at the center's facility at 1525 Marriottsville Road.

Mass will be included. Registration is requested as soon as possible. The cost is $25, and includes lunch.

Help sought -- Humane Society of Washington County asks residents of Washington, Frederick and Howard counties to help with a rehabilitation effort for more than 70 horses impounded by the society last year because of neglect. Alfalfa is needed for horses that are being rehabilitated at Days End Farm Horse Rescue in Lisbon. 301-733- 2060, Ext. 237.

Musicians sought -- The Glenwood Community Center is developing a list of those who would like to play music with other musicians. The sessions are to be open to anyone who has a musical instrument. Country line dancing -- Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks is sponsoring a beginner country line dancing class for ages 55 and older from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesdays, through June 26, at Glenwood Community Center, 2400 Route 97, Cooksville. Little or no dance experience is required. Students can learn the basic steps of country line dancing. Wear or take leather-soled shoes; sneakers are not recommended. The cost is $27. Sports camps -- The River Hill Boosters will sponsor summer sports camps to help young athletes improve basic skills. The camps will be held at River Hill High School. Spring carnival -- Days End Farm will hold its Spring Carnival from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 23. The event, which raises money for the foster program for horses and for education and outreach, will feature Kadbury and Lily, two fillies born to mothers rescued by Days End.
