Lake walk today to aid cancer patients
The Red Devils, a nonprofit volunteer organization, will sponsor its fifth Red Devils Heat and Sole Stroll at 10 a.m. today, rain or shine, at Centennial Lake in Ellicott City. Registration is to begin at 9 a.m.
The 2.4-mile walk around the lake will help raise money for support services for Maryland breast cancer patients and their families. The organization pays for transportation to medical appointments and helps pay for co-payments for prescription drugs, house-cleaning, meals and groceries.
The Red Devils, named for the nickname of a powerful cancer drug, Adriamycin, was formed in 2002 by friends and family of Jessica Cowling and Ginny Schardt, two young women who lost their lives to breast cancer.
This year's race is dedicated to Ginny Worthington, mother of Ginny Schardt and a founding member of the group, who died of thyroid cancer in February.
Registration for the walk is $35; $70 for families. Everyone (including pets) is welcome to participate in the noncompetitive event.
