The phrase "Death Valley" conjures up images of scorching hot deserts, but a visit to the California national park in the winter usually brings moderate weather and unlimited opportunities for exploration. This huge park, approximately the size of Connecticut, contains an amazing variety of unusual scenery; one often has the sensation of wandering on a distant planet. Last January, as my family descended from Ubehebe Peak, my son and daughter gazed down on an alien landscape.
