Today, a fine Sunday in May, is also, for many Christians, Pentecost, or Whitsun Day - the 50th day after Easter. Long popular for baptisms (when babies wear white), the name may be derived from "White Sunday." The day has accumulated some odd traditions, most involving cheese. In Gloustershire, England, it's "Bread and Cheese Day," when the locals prepare the foodstuffs to be hurled from ramparts of the old castle to the riffraff below. It recalls 13th-century payments for timber-cutting rights in nearby woods. Ah, those Brits.
