ACS to announce award winners
The Association of Community Services will announce winners of its Audrey Robbins Humanitarian Awards for 2007 and distribute the awards at its 32nd humanitarian awards luncheon to be held from noon to 2 p.m. today at the Meeting House in Oakland Mills, Columbia. Terry Owens of WMAR-TV News will be master of ceremonies.
Joe Willmott has been named Volunteer of the Year for his work with youth through the A-OK Mentoring program, the Homelessness Board and Congregations Concerned for the Homeless.
Linda Zumbrun of the Department of Social Services has been named Employee of the Year.
The Employee Team of the Year is the Mobile Crisis Team, which responds to psychiatric emergencies, family crises and conflict, traumatic deaths and other emergencies. The team is a partnership of Grassroots, Humanim, the Howard County Police Department and the Mental Health Authority.
Prepare for Success Community Partnership, a program that since 2002 has provided 8,700 students with backpacks filled with school supplies, is Volunteer Team of the Year.
Cancer-affected artists to display their work
Lilly Oncology on Canvas, an art exhibit by people whose lives have been touched by cancer, will be on display at the Howard County Conservancy on Thursday and Friday and at the Mall in Columbia on Sunday.
Fifty artworks coming to Howard County were selected from 2,151 entries in an international art competition sponsored by Eli Lilly and Co. The local exhibit is sponsored by Howard County General Hospital, the conservancy, the Howard County Arts Council and several local oncology practices.
A reception, which will include light refreshments, will be held from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. tomorrow at the conservancy. For complimentary tickets: 410-740-7601.
The exhibit will be open to the public at the conservancy from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and at the mall from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. Selections from the exhibit will be at the sponsoring oncology practices from Monday through May 23.

Applications available for camp for girls
Through a partnership with the Women's Giving Circle of Howard County and Maryland Leadership Workshops Inc., applications are available for Journey 2007, a residential summer camp for girls entering eighth and ninth grades in the fall.
The camp for 50 Howard County girls will run from June 24 through June 30 at Washington College in Chestertown. Students in the program will live in the college dorms, eat in the cafeteria and experience a collegiate atmosphere.
The camp is a part of the Women's Giving Circle's efforts to support young girls during a formative time in their lives. The camp's program includes workshops on empowerment and motivation; communication and decision-making skills; goal-setting and conflict resolution; group projects; mentoring; and recreational activities such as swimming, athletics, dance, and team-building games and activities.
The theme of "Womanhood and what it means to be a woman" will be addressed throughout the program.

Moderate-housing lottery deadline near
Howard County's open application period for the Moderate Income Housing Unit Program ends May 23.
The program requires developers of new housing in certain districts to sell or rent a certain percentage of the dwelling units to households of moderate income.
The first lottery for applicants certified as eligible will be held in June.

I-95 ramp closures set today, tomorrow
As part of the State Highway Administration's $15 million safety and resurfacing project along Interstate 95 between Routes 32 and 100, the southbound I-95 ramp to eastbound Route 100 will be closed today and the westbound Route 32 ramp to southbound I-95 will be closed tomorrow, weather permitting.
The ramps are to be closed between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. Detours will be posted, the SHA said.

Slave quarters renovation complete
The Columbia Association will hold a Jubilee to celebrate the renovation of the Woodlawn Slave Quarters at 3 p.m. Sunday at Woodlawn, off Bendix Road in Columbia.
Parking and shuttle vans will be available at the Dorsey Building, 9250 Bendix Road. After tours of the site and a ribbon-cutting, a reception will be held from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at Oakland Manor, 5430 Vantage Point Road, Columbia.
Vocalist Pat Leake and volunteers in period dress from the Patapsco Female Institute and the Ellicott City Colored School will be at the Woodlawn site to give those who attend a sense of the flavor of life in the mid-1800s. Oakland Manor is to have exhibits on Woodlawn, historic preservation and the history of slavery, and HBO's Unchained Memories, Readings from the Slave Narratives will be shown.
The Slave Quarters was on Preservation Howard County's list of Endangered Sites from 2001 to 2005 before the Columbia Association undertook its restoration.
Although it is likely that the building once housed slaves, research on the site is continuing, said Barbara Kellner, manager of the Columbia Archives and a member of the Columbia Association's Woodlawn Task Force.

Volunteers needed for wine festival
Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks is accepting applications from people ages 21 and older who are interested in volunteering at the 13th Wine in the Woods Festival, to be held Saturday and Sunday at Symphony Woods in Columbia.
In exchange for working a 3 1/2 -hour shift, volunteers receive an admission ticket redeemable on either day. Shifts are available from 2:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. either day.
An orientation for new volunteers will be held from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Recreation and Parks headquarters, 7120 Oakland Mills Road, Columbia.

Free breast exams to be conducted
In conjunction with the Blossoms of Hope program, which plants cherry trees across Howard County and works to promote breast cancer screening, the Howard County Health Department is bringing a mobile clinic to designated planting sites to conduct free breast exams.
A clinic is to be held from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. tomorrow at the Miller branch library in Ellicott City.
Relatives raising children can get help
Grandparents and others raising a relative's child are invited to a support group that meets from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. on the second Wednesday of each month at the Bain Center, 5470 Ruth Keeton Way, Columbia.
Information on services and financial assistance will be available.
The program, Relatives as Parents, is sponsored by the Howard County Department of Citizen Services' Office of Children's Services.
