Bedard's mistakes
Erik Bedard dominated at times, striking out 11 Indians. But a few crucial mistakes ended up keeping him from his fourth win. Casey Blake hit an RBI double in the fifth inning. And then, when the Orioles were one out away from getting out of the sixth inning with a one-run lead, Jhonny Peralta hit a two-run homer that just got over the right-field fence. That gave the Indians a 4-3 lead.
Mass confusion
With men on first and third and one out, Ramon Hernandez hit a fly ball that Indians center fielder Grady Sizemore made a diving catch on. Nick Markakis tagged up and scored but Miguel Tejada, who was on first, either forgot how many outs there were or thought the ball had dropped in and took off toward third. Sizemore threw to first to get the out on Tejada. The Orioles weren't awarded a run. They protested and the run finally went on the scoreboard 3 1/2 innings later.
Retribution?
An inning and a half after Bedard hit Sizemore with a pitch, Cleveland's Jeremy Sowers drilled Miguel Tejada. The ball nearly went behind Tejada, who limped to first base. It also loaded the bases, but Sowers got out of the jam by inducing Hernandez to fly out to left.
On deck
In this afternoon's series finale, Jaret Wright (0-2, 6.14) will oppose Cleveland right-hander Fausto Carmona (1-1, 5.00). It is Wright's first start since he was removed in the sixth inning on April 10 against the Detroit Tigers due to right shoulder tightness. Wright pitched the first six seasons of his career with the Indians but has never faced them. Carmona is 0-2 with a 9.39 ERA in three games against the Orioles.
