'Jazz Under the Stars' picnic, concert slated

The Glenelg High School Jazz Ensemble will hold its "Jazz Under the Stars" community picnic dinner and concert at 5 p.m. May 20 at Chapel View Farm in Woodbine.

Families and friends can take lawn chairs and blankets and have a catered picnic dinner and hear the concert. Singer Deanna Bogart and the Glenelg Jazz Ensemble will perform.

The cost is $30; $15 for children to age 12. Those younger than age 5 are admitted free. Tickets can be purchased online by May 16 at (click on the InstantSeats logo). No tickets will be available at the event.

'Jazz on the Hill' scheduled for May 12

The River Hill High School music department will present "Jazz on the Hill," featuring the school's jazz ensembles and guest soloist Chris Vadala, at 6 p.m. May 12 at the school. Dinner will be served at 5:30 p.m.

Those who attend are asked to take lawn chairs or blankets.

Tickets (purchased before Friday) are $25; $15 for children ages 6 to 12. Children to age 6 are admitted free. No tickets will be sold after May 11.

Help sought -- Humane Society of Washington County asks residents of Washington, Frederick and Howard counties to help with a rehabilitation effort for more than 70 horses impounded by the society last year because of neglect. Alfalfa is needed for horses that are being rehabilitated at Days End Farm Horse Rescue in Lisbon. 301-733-2060, Ext. 237.

Fitness, wellness -- Glenwood Community Center, operated by Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks, offers fitness and weight areas, a three-lane walking and jogging track and a gymnasium with two courts suitable for basketball, volleyball and other activities. The center also features an arts-and-crafts activity room, a group exercise and dance room and meeting rooms that are available for parties, weddings and other rentals. The center also offers personal training services and an individualized exercise program. A medical clearance form is required. Fees vary according to plan. Massage therapy and reflexology are also to be offered. Appointments are available between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. Tuesdays. Prices range from $35 to $85. The center, which opened Oct. 31 and hopes to attract patrons from Columbia as well as western Howard County, is at 2400 Route 97, Cooksville. 410-313-4840.

Country line-dancing -- Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks is sponsoring a beginner country line-dancing class for people ages 55 and older from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesdays, through June 26, at Glenwood Community Center, 2400 Route 97, Cooksville. Little or no dance experience is required. Students can learn the basic steps in the new, energized version of country line-dancing. Wear or take leather-soled shoes; sneakers are not recommended.
