A Montgomery County police officer was critically injured yesterday when he was struck by another officer's cruiser while pursuing a suspect on foot, authorities said.

Officer Luke Hoffman, 24, was pursuing a suspected drunken driver, when the man bailed out of his car and ran, police said.

Hoffman pursued the man on foot and was struck by a police cruiser in the 14700 block of Old Georgia Ave. in Aspen Hill about 1:30 a.m. The cruiser was driven by Officer Stephen Wofsey, 26, said Officer Kyle Cochran, a spokesman.

After hitting the officer, the cruiser swerved off the roadway, went down an embankment and struck a tree, Cochran said.

Both officers were flown to Maryland Shock Trauma Center, where Hoffman was reported in "extremely grave condition" last night. Wofsey was treated and released, Cochran said.

The suspect got away, Cochran said.
