An Ellicott City man died and another person was hospitalized after a four-vehicle collision late yesterday afternoon on the Baltimore Beltway near Liberty Road that caused miles-long delays for motorists, a state police spokesman said.

The accident occurred on the outer loop about 5:30 p.m. when a 1999 Toyota driven by Michele Lynn Bosley, 26, of the 5500 block of Thomas Ave. in Halethorpe drove from the median shoulder into the fast lane and collided with a 2006 Land Rover driven by an Owings Mills man, said the spokesman, Trooper Darryl Clark.

The Toyota then struck the driver's side of a 1996 Chrysler, operated by Kirk Alan Mercer, 53, of the 11000 block of Triadelphia Road in Ellicott City, as it entered the highway from a ramp, pushing it against a guardrail, Clark said. The Toyota then spun and hit the rear of a 2006 Jeep driven by a Columbia woman, he said.

Mercer and Bosley were flown to Maryland Shock Trauma Center, where Mercer died at 6:50 p.m. and Bosley was treated for head injuries, Clark said.
