In a crucial vote that drew a huge turnout, Nicolas Sarkozy and Segolene Royal finished first and second, respectively, in yesterday's opening round of balloting for the French presidency. Barry Bonds hit his 740th home run, connecting for the second consecutive game in the San Francisco Giants' 2-1 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks. Bonds moved within 15 homers of Hank Aaron's record. pg 5d

Orioles sweep Blue Jays

Nick Markakis and Miguel Tejada each had three RBIs, and the Orioles beat the Toronto Blue Jays, 7-3, to complete a three-game sweep at Camden Yards. The Orioles, who won four straight games only once last year, won their fourth straight game for the second time this season. pg 1d


Fans await 'Heroes' return

NBC hit Heroes returns from hiatus today. While the TV series took a break, its online comic strip - and hordes of fans - did not. So great is the success of the drama's on-air and online components that some analysts are calling the show a model for TV in the Internet age. That kind of excitement and loyalty makes Heroes by far the hottest new series of the network season. pg 1C
