With 15 seconds left Jonathan Engelke scored on an assist from Bobby Griebe as the No. 19 Towson men (8-4, 5-1) clinched the Colonial Athletic Association regular-season title last night with a 9-8 road victory over No. 13 Drexel (10-5, 4-1).
Colin Ambler led Drexel with four points.
Ron Garling had a goal and two assists for Drexel, but Andrew Chapman, the CAA's leading scorer, was held to a pair of goals.
Engelke, Brian Vetter and Adam Hagelin each had two goals for Towson.
No. 9 Maryland 14, Penn 10 -- Max Ritz tied his career high with six points on a season-best four goals and two assists to lead the visiting Terrapins (9-4) past the Quakers (6-6). Maryland's defense was tenacious all afternoon, forcing 18 of Penn's 26 turnovers. Steve Whittenberg enjoyed another tremendous game, forcing four turnovers and scooping three groundballs. Ryan Clarke and Joe Cinosky each had four groundballs and combined to cause five turnovers.
No. 15 UMBC 20, Vermont 11 -- The host Retrievers (8-4, 3-1) scored a season-high 20 goals and clinched a spot in the America East Conference Tournament with a convincing win over the Catamounts (3-10, 0-4) on Senior Day. Andy Gallagher notched five goals while Drew Westervelt and Cayle Ratcliffe each had hat tricks in UMBC's victory.
Canisius 15, Mount St. Mary's 9 -- Michael Blocho and Kevin Ross each had four goals as The Golden Griffins (6-6, 5-2 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference) soundly defeated the visiting Mountaineers (2-9, 2-4). The loss all but eliminates Mount St. Mary's from league playoff contention.
McDaniel 11, Haverford 9 -- The host Green Terror (7-5, 2-4 Centennial Conference) scored four unanswered fourth-quarter goals to rally past Haverford (7-5, 4-3). McDaniel won despite losing 19 of 24 faceoffs and being outshot 36-26.
Washington College 6, Franklin & Marshall 5 -- Kolyn Kirby scored the game-tying goal with 12 seconds left and Chris Read scored the game-winner just before time expired as the visiting Shoremen (10-4, 5-3 Centennial Conference) scored three goals in the final 1:16 of the game to defeat the Diplomats (5-6, 2-4).
No. 3 Duke 11, Army 5 -- Zack Greer scored five goals while Peter Lamade added two goals and two assists as the Blue Devils (11-2) defeated the visiting Black Knights (6-6).
Vermont 20, UMBC 10 -- The visiting Retrievers (7-9, 2-3 America East) could not overcome a 15-3 first-half deficit as they fell to the Catamounts (5-11, 2-3).
McDaniel 17, Muhlenberg 12 -- Kerrie Wuenschel recorded five goals and added an assist to lead the Green Terror (11-4, 5-4 Centennial Conference) to victory over the visiting Mules (8-7, 2-7). Katie Reimann led Muhlenberg with three goals while Ruth Morrongiello added a team-high four points on two goals and two assists.
Washington College 18, Bryn Mawr 6 -- The Shorewomen (7-10, 3-6 Centennial Conference) got four goals from attacker Caitlin Beane and a hat trick from midfielder Jenna Gouck as they defeated the visiting Owls (3-12, 0-8).
