Glenelg High sets college planning workshop

Glenelg High School will present a college planning workshop at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the school cafeteria.

Rich Edgar, director of admissions at St. Mary's College of Maryland, will speak.

A breakout session is to include representatives from the University of Maryland, College Park; Towson University; McDaniel College; University of Maryland, Baltimore County; Salisbury University; and Frostburg State University.

Goals workshop at Marriotts Ridge

The Marriotts Ridge High School PTSA will present Nancy Sheain, president and founder of Building Futures LLC, in a workshop called "Success Strategies: Goal Setting and Achieving," to be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the school auditorium.

The workshop teaches skills useful in setting realistic goals, and staying on track to achieve success.

Help sought -- The Humane Society of Washington County asks residents of Washington, Frederick and Howard counties to help with a rehabilitation effort for more than 70 horses impounded by the society last year because of neglect. Alfalfa is needed for horses that are being rehabilitated at Days End Farm Horse Rescue in Lisbon. 301-733-2060, Ext. 237.

Fitness, wellness -- Glenwood Community Center, operated by Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks, offers fitness and weight areas, a three-lane walking and jogging track and a gymnasium with two courts suitable for basketball, volleyball and other activities. The center also features an arts-and-crafts activity room, a group exercise and dance room and meeting rooms that are available for parties, weddings and other rentals. The center also offers personal training services and an individualized exercise program. A medical clearance form is required. Fees vary according to plan. Massage therapy and reflexology are also to be offered. Appointments are available between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. Tuesdays. Prices range from $35 to $85. The center, which opened Oct. 31 and hopes to attract patrons from Columbia as well as western Howard County, is at 2400 Route 97, Cooksville. 410-313-4840.

Open observatory -- The Gould Observatory at Glenelg Country School will hold an Open Observatory Night from 8:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. today at the school, 12793 Folly Quarter Road, near Glenelg. Those who attend will have an opportunity to try the observatory's telescope, take laser-guided constellation tours and see close-up views of the moon's surface. The event, which is the first of a projected series of astronomical events, is dependent on the weather. The observatory, which was given to the school by the Gould family, was opened in 2003. Country line-dancing -- Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks will sponsor a beginner country line-dancing class for people ages 55 and older from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesdays, this week through June 26, at Glenwood Community Center, 2400 Route 97, Cooksville. La Leche -- La Leche League of Western Howard County, a chapter of the international organization, meets from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. the fourth Wednesday of each month at Linden-Linthicum United Methodist Church, 12101 Linden-Linthicum Lane, Clarksville.
