In Annapolis, St. John's College and the Naval Academy settle their differences every April on a green playing field.
Ever since April 1983, when the croquet gauntlet was thrown down in a city pub, the two schools have met in a celebrated match on the St. John's College lawn.
Lore has it a group of midshipmen challenged a group of Johnnies to name a sport, any sport, and the Naval Academy team would win - or conquer them easily. And now the rivalry is history.
Yesterday, the midshipmen squared off against the Johnnies, the defending champions, for the 25th time. Going into the match, the record was 19-5 in favor of St. John's College.
