The Howard County Summer Theatre will hold auditions for its production of the Disney musical Beauty and the Beast from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. tomorrow at Mount Hebron High School, 9440 Route 99, Ellicott City.
Those interested should prepare a song and take sheet music, an instrumental tape or compact disc; a pianist will be available.
The auditions are open to adults and youths in grade nine or higher, although a few roles are available for children in grades two through eight. College students who cannot attend an audition should contact Tom Sankey, 410-465-8623.
Performance dates are July 6-8 and July 11-14. Proceeds from the show will benefit Hospice of Howard County and Prepare for Success.

A chance to dance at the library
The Miller branch library, 9421 Frederick Road, Ellicott City, will sponsor "DDR for Teens@ HC Library, a chance to dance to the video game, "Dance Dance Revolution" for ages 11 and older, from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday and on the third Wednesday of each month.

Graduates -- Army Pvt. You L. Lee, daughter of Christopher Lee and stepdaughter of Myong Lee of Ellicott City, has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.
Photo contest -- The Ellicott City Restoration Foundation Inc. is holding its third amateur photography contest for pictures in the categories of "vintage," "adult" and "junior," taken in the Ellicott City Historic District. "Vintage" photos must have been taken before 1972. The "adult" category is for photographers ages 18 and older; the "junior" category is for those ages 17 and younger. Winners will be announced June 2 at the Thomas Isaac Log Cabin. Entries can be delivered to the Howard County Tourism Council office, 8267 Main St., Ellicott City by 5 p.m. May 18. The office, at the side entrance of the post office building, is open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday. The photographs will be on display in Ellicott City merchants' windows during June.

Knitting for charity -- A community-service knitting and crocheting group meets to knit and crochet afghans, blankets, baby clothes and other items for charities, hospitals and senior centers. Veteran, author -- The Miller branch library, 9421 Frederick Road, Ellicott City, will sponsor "Meet the Maryland Author: Rudy DePaola" at 2 p.m. Wednesday. A veteran of World War II, DePaola draws on his adventures as a tail gunner in the South Pacific in his first novel, Wings of the Bullet: A Story of Young Americans at War. Milltown quilters -- Milltown Quilters of Ellicott City is celebrating the group's 10th anniversary and sponsoring a quilt show, to be held Thursday through Saturday at First Presbyterian Church of Howard County, 9325 Presbyterian Circle, at U.S. 29 and Route 108. Demonstrations, a display of vintage quilts, a silent auction of donated handmade items, vendors, a peddler's table at which members sell quilting books, patterns and other items are planned. Poetry month -- The Miller branch library is presenting a program celebrating National Poetry Month. "Do You Think You Don't Like Poetry?" will continue at 7 p.m. Thursday and April 26. Spring fair -- The Mount Hebron Nursery School Parents Group will hold its 23rd Spring Fair from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 28, rain or shine, at Mount Hebron Presbyterian Church. The church is on Mount Hebron Drive, Ellicott City. Children's activities will include a petting farm, Moon Bounce, face-painting, crafts, games with prizes, a mystery balloon containing prizes and a Mother's Day Secret Shop. Entertainment is to include performances by Dance Foundations, Kangaroo Kids precision jump-rope team, U.S. Tae Kwon Do and the Teelin School of Irish Dance.
