Walk with a purpose

The lowdown -- About 5,000 Marylanders and 400,000 people nationwide suffer from multiple sclerosis, and 200 more Americans are diagnosed weekly, according to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. The MS Walk raises money to help people living with multiple sclerosis and fund research. Twelve MS Walks will happen across Maryland beginning this Saturday and running through April 22.

If you go -- Walks held Saturday will be in Columbia, Easton and Waldorf. Sunday walks will be in Cumberland, Towson and Westminster. Baltimore's MS Walk will be April 19. Walks will be in Hagerstown, Havre de Grace and Ocean City on April 21. Walks in Annapolis and Frederick round out the month on April 22. Wild things

The lowdown -- On Saturday, nature enthusiasts get the chance to meet the resident animals of the Irvine Nature Center. Kids can hear about their favorite critter and ask questions, and, for the daring child, touching the animal will be permitted.

If you go -- The event is 10 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. The Irvine Nature Center is at 8400 Greenspring Ave. in Stevenson. Admission is free for members and $1 for nonmembers. For more information, call 410-484-2413, ext. 10.

Racing with the wind

The lowdown -- Horses can't fly, but when $30,000 is on the line, they try anyway. See for yourself Saturday at the 96th My Lady's Manor Steeplechase Race. It's a full day of four races over timber: the 83rd John Rush Streett Memorial Steeplechase, the fifth John D. Schapiro Memorial Steeplechase and the new Yoicks Cup, in addition to the My Lady's Manor Steeplechase. Regional hunt clubs also will face off in the Maryland Governor's Cup Inter-Hunt Challenge Relay Races. Bluegrass band Manor Grass will entertain spectators, who also can shop in vendor tents.
