Poverty, war -- Howard Community College will open an exhibition of prints and drawings by German artist and social activist Kathe Kollwitz on April 12 in the Rouse Company Foundation Gallery of the college's new Peter and Elizabeth Horowitz Visual and Performing Arts Center, 10901 Little Patuxent Parkway, Columbia. The works, many of which depict the ravages of poverty and war in Germany in the first half of the 20th century, are from the private collection of Ted and Margaret Klitzke. The first woman elected to membership in the Prussian Academy of Art, Kollwitz was expelled when the Nazis came to power. A reception for the exhibition will be held from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. April 19. The show runs through May 24. Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. Rebecca Bafford, gallery director, 410-772-4189.
