Mulch sales benefit high school
The Severna Park High School boosters are selling mulch online at www.spboosters.com through Saturday. Hardwood, double-shredded bark mulch costs $5 per 3-cubic-foot bag, and $2.60 of each bag is tax deductible. Home delivery April 14 costs $25, or customers can pick it up at the high school that day. Registration starts tomorrow
Anne Arundel County public schools prekindergarten and kindergarten registration for the 2007-2008 school year will be held at county elementary schools beginning tomorrow.
Registrations must be made in person during school hours tomorrow through April 11. All county schools are closed for spring break April 5, 6 and 9.
The prekindergarten program in Anne Arundel County public elementary schools selects 4-year-olds based on economic and education need.
Children who are 4 on or before Sept. 1, 2007, are eligible to apply for the 2007-2008 school year.
Parents should check with the schools offering prekindergarten for specific registration times or to make arrangements for translators. A list of schools offering prekindergarten programs is available at www.aacps.org.
Expo focuses on AVID programs
Anne Arundel County public schools will hold an expo about the district's 31 AVID programs from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. April 17 in the Parham Administration Building at 2644 Riva Road, Annapolis.
The AVID program provides middle and high school students who are considered in the academic "middle" with the skills, support, and academic challenges that can prepare them to advance to more rigorous college-preparatory courses.
The expo will give educators and members of the community a chance to review AVID certification portfolios and displays from schools that have AVID programs.
AVID teachers will showcase their students' work. Visitors can attend the expo at any time during the event.

Dinner will benefit school
St. John Lutheran Church will hold a spaghetti dinner from 4 to 7 p.m. April 21 to benefit St. John's Christian Day School.
Tickets are available in advance or can be purchased at the door of the church at 226 Washburn Ave., Brooklyn. The church is suggesting donations of $7 for adults and $3 for children 12 and under. Entertainment will be provided by John Norfolk at the keyboard. There will also be a craft table.
Award honors school graduate
Donna Marie Hurst Murphy received the 2007 Distinguished Graduate Award from Monsignor Slade Catholic School in Glen Burnie, in conjunction with the National Catholic Educational Association.
The award given last week honors graduates of Catholic elementary schools for outstanding personal and professional achievements.
Murphy attended Monsignor Slade, then Holy Trinity School, after which she attended Archbishop Spalding High School and Loyola College.
She works as a guidance department chairwoman in Baltimore County public schools and is vice president of the school board at Monsignor Slade.
Seven Slade eighth-graders were inducted into the Esprit Chapter of National Junior Honor Society at the March 23 ceremony: Monica Capella, Erin Dustin, Karina Faust, Julia Jester, Caroline Ladzinski, Connor McGuinness and Lindsey Rennie.
Four Slade seventh-graders were also inducted: Madeline Dwivedi, Eric Petrosky, Evelyn Posey and Jamie Rombach.
School board plans budget forum
The Anne Arundel County Board of Education will hold a budget forum Tuesday from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the boardroom of the Dr. Carol Sheffey Parham Building, 2644 Riva Road, Annapolis.
The forum will give residents the opportunity to discuss the operating and capital budgets adopted by the board Feb. 21.
County Executive John R. Leopold will unveil his proposed fiscal 2008 budget to the County Council on May 1. The council must approve a budget by June 1, at which time the board will prioritize the funds allocated by the county. The board is scheduled to adopt a final budget June 20.
