Howard County police are warning owners of Honda Civics and Acura Integras built before 2001 that their vehicles are being targeted in thefts.
Of the 109 attempted or successful car thefts in Howard County this year, 26 of them, or 24 percent, involved Civics or Integras.
The cars do not require keys with programmed computer chips to start, making them an easy target for thieves, said Pfc. Jamie Myers, a police spokesman. Police also said that some owners have added valuable extras to the cars after purchasing them, which make the vehicles appealing and valuable targets.
Police recommend that owners protect their cars with anti-theft devices and park them in locked garages.
