Performer of the Year
Graham Bazell
Atholton
After being overshadowed by teammate Andrew Revelle last year, Bazell made a name for himself this winter.
The sophomore turned in some outstanding performances, especially in the 3,200, where his time of 9 minutes, 13.65 seconds at the Montgomery Invitational on Jan. 13 was the nation's best at that point (at season's end, it was ninth-best). He later won the 1,600 and 3,200 at the county and Class 3A-2A West regional meets. After that, Bazell finished second in the 1,600 at the state meet but won the 3,200 in record-breaking style. His time of 9:30.06 shattered the Class 2A and state meet records and helped the Raiders finish fifth overall. Bazell and J.P. Allera from Wilde Lake were close until near the end, when Bazell ran away from everyone.
Coach of the Year
Matt Clever
Howard
The Lions were consistent throughout the season, winning the county meet for the first time in more than two decades, and also winning the Class 3A-2A West regional before finishing third in the state meet. Clever said during the season that there was something about this team that was special, and his feeling proved correct.
