The boys basketball team from River Hill and the girls squad from Atholton won state basketball titles for the first time Saturday. The Hawks defeated Bethesda-Chevy Chase, 60-51, behind 28 points and 10 rebounds from Tommy Brenton, and the Raiders upended Southern-Anne Arundel, 69-62, behind Taylor Chapman's 21 points and 15 rebounds. Brenton, a 6-foot-4 senior, set a state record by making 19 of 20 free throws, including his first 17 attempts. Michael Campanaro and Dan Hostetler added 12 and 11 points, respectively, for the Hawks (23-5), who outrebounded the team from Montgomery County.
Atholton trailed by nine early in the fourth quarter but then outscored Southern 20-1. Brittany Coughlan had 19 points for the Radiers (25-3) and Julie Taylor, the only senior on the team and the program's all-time leading scorer, added 11 points and 16 rebounds.
