Orioles 5, Red Sox 3

The Baltimore Sun

Big names

The Orioles had six of their projected starters in yesterday's lineup, leading to some media speculation - especially from the Japanese press - that manager Sam Perlozzo wanted to match up his regulars against much-hyped Daisuke Matsuzaka. Perlozzo denied this before the 5-3 win over the Boston Red Sox in Fort Myers, Fla., saying, "We look at road trips and try to even things out for everyone. ... I didn't know we were facing him when I did it."

Getting noticed

Jason Dubois wasn't given much of a chance to make the team as a fifth outfielder, but he's not going down without a fight. Dubois hit a tie-breaking, two-run homer off Matsuzaka in the fourth and improved to 7-for-12 this spring.

Hardly economical

Steve Trachsel loaded the bases with one out in the first inning on two singles and a walk, but escaped the jam. The Red Sox scored twice in the second, and Manny Ramirez had a leadoff single in the third. Trachsel allowed six hits in three innings and threw 64 pitches, 37 for strikes.

On deck

The Orioles return to their spring training home today to face the Los Angeles Dodgers. Erik Bedard will oppose Brett Tomko.
