Left-hander Adam Loewen struck out five in two innings, and the Orioles held on to beat the Florida Marlins for their fourth straight victory, 5-3, yesterday at Fort Lauderdale Stadium. Using a new curveball grip taught to him by teammate Erik Bedard, Loewen struck out four straight Marlins, and, after allowing a walk and a single, he struck out Matt Treanor to end his outing.
The Orioles hit three straight doubles in a four-run second inning off Marlins starter Chris George. After Aubrey Huff doubled, Kevin Millar broke an 0-for-7 slump with a two-run double and Ramon Hernandez drove in one with a double. Jay Payton had an RBI triple.
The Orioles play the World Series champion St. Louis Cardinals today at Fort Lauderdale Stadium. Steve Trachsel will make his second start of the spring, opposite Cardinals ace Chris Carpenter. Brian Burres, Chris Ray, Jamie Walker, Chad Bradford and Paul Shuey are also scheduled to pitch for the Orioles.
