Sunni family targeted

Gunmen rounded up a Sunni family that had received death threats for joining U.S.-organized talks with local Shiites, hauling away the men and boys and killing all six yesterday as insurgents expanded a campaign of fear against opponents. pg 17a

Crackdown on Russian protest

Police in St. Petersburg, Russia, clubbed protesters and dragged them into buses yesterday in response to a demonstration against the Kremlin in the heart of President Vladimir Putin's hometown. Protesters were demonstrating against what they said was Russia's retreat from democracy. pg 18a


Officer's wife describes attack

The wife of a correctional officer injured on Friday said her husband was jumped by at least four inmates and stabbed seven times. Edouardo F. Edouazin, 28, was returning an inmate to his cell when the inmate - who is serving a life sentence for murder - attacked him with a homemade knife, officials said. pg 1b

Alcohol a factor in brawl

Police investigating a fight at a Howard County high school that left an 18-year-old dead say that alcohol contributed to the incident. A party at a house near the football field was raided that night, and police issued 15 citations for underage drinking. pg 1b

As Sens. Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama head to Selma, Ala., for the 42nd anniversary of Bloody Sunday, the Democratic presidential contenders are engaged in what party officials say is one of the most competitive scrambles for black supporters since the Voting Rights Act was passed four decades ago. pg 3a

Ship excavation under way

A shipwreck off the North Carolina coast believed to be that of pirate Blackbeard could be fully excavated in three years. Experts say artifacts recovered from the ship, which ran aground in 1718, leave no doubt the wreckage belonged to the pirate. pg 16a
