County officials urge CO safety

Harford County Division of Emergency Operations urges residents to take precautions to prevent carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning.

A carbon monoxide detector with a low-level indicator monitors CO levels in a home. Appliances that burn fossil fuels pose a risk of CO release.

At low levels of exposure, victims might experience mild nausea and headache. Moderate levels will aggravate symptoms, and victims might feel light-headed and have other flu-like symptoms. High levels of exposure can cause neurological damage and death.

Residents should have chimneys cleaned and heating appliances checked.

Emergency planners also encourage residents to be prepared for emergencies by having sufficient supplies on hand, and a plan in case members are separated.

For details on CO safety and emergency planning, call the Division of Emergency Operations at 410-638-4900.

Firefighters plan bingo fundraiser

The Level Volunteer Fire Company will sponsor a Longaberger basket bingo March 24 at the firehouse, 3633 Level Village Road.

Doors open at 6 p.m. and games begin at 7 p.m. Proceeds benefit the free Level VFC Safety Camp to be held in July. The camp offers a three-day adventure for children in kindergarten through fifth grade.

The program teaches campers to prevent accidents, prepare for the unexpected and react in an emergency. Children learn safety lessons, make crafts, play games, ride a fire engine and squirt water from a real fire hose.

Topics include water safety, personal safety, seat belt and helmet safety, fire prevention and wildlife safety. Planned guest appearances include Otto the Talking Car, Smokey Bear, Sparky the Fire Dog and the Harford County Miss Fire Prevention.

Basket bingo tickets are $10 in advance or $12 at the door. The evening includes separate special games, raffles, baked goods and refreshments, along with the offering of a 50/50 cover.
