McDaniel women out in first round of NCAA

ASHLAND, Va. -- William Paterson defeated No. 22 McDaniel, 69-61 in the first round of the NCAA Division III women's basketball tournament yesterday.

Theresa Hess led the Green Terror (23-4) with 10 points and seven rebounds in her final game in a McDaniel uniform.

Fellow seniors Heather Thompson and Katy Powell added nine points apiece. Thompson also grabbed 10 rebounds.

William Paterson's Michelle Pellichero scored 12 of her game-high 21 points in the second half.

Melissa Moore added a double double for the Pioneers (23-5) with 18 points and 13 rebounds. Luci Custis scored 10 points.

Trailing 26-23, Julie Haledjian hit a short jumper and Pellichero made one of her five three-pointers to give William Paterson the lead for good with 4:18 left in the half.

Clinging to a 34-32 lead at the break, the Pioneers opened the second half on a 17-4 run.

Five points from Jamie Morningstar sparked an 11-2 burst that pulled the Green Terror within six with 9:46 remaining.
